Asif Mohiuddin (30) not only defends the rights of women and minorities in Bangladesh. He is also an advocate of the right of individuals not to confess to any religion. Moreover Asif Mohiuddin co-founded the Shahbag movement in Bangladesh, which argues for the strict division of state and religion in the country, as well as justice for victims of Bangladesh's 1971 war of independence. On the basis of the „Information and Communication Technology Act” (ICT 2006/13), the Bangladeshi judiciary sued him for blasphemy and defamation of the government. The proceedings are still pending. Before the court, Asif Mohiuddin relies upon his right to freedom of expression. In the event of a judgment against him, he faces a prison sentence of up to ten years. Asif Mohiuddin received the "Freedom Of Expression Award 2014" by British Humanist Association. Currently living in Hamburg on a year-long scholarship of the Hamburg Foundation for Politically Persecuted People, he will talk about the present human rights situation in Bangladesh and his experiences in Germany.
